Featuring News & Information on SIGARMS

My SIG rant...

It's SIG - Not Sig

"Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft"

Properly written as "SIG" in capital letters. It should not be written as "Sig" in mixed case. Yes it matters. If doing things correctly still matters to you. SIG is an acronym and should be written in upper case letters (SIG) like all acronyms. Upper case letters just like H&K or S&W or AK-47. More and more I visit "so-called" gun information webs to see "Sig" in mixed case.

"Swiss Industry Group"

SIG is German for "Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft" which  translates literally to the English as "Swiss Industry Society" or less literally "Swiss Industry Group". The latter "Swiss Industry Group" is probably a bit easier for English speaking persons to remember and certainly easier to pronounce. It also uses the same letters as the original German acronym (SIG).

The SIG Arms companies have changed ownership and corporate affiliations over the last 30 years, so usage of the trade names involved with the "Swiss Industry Group" has varied. This is complicated by the fact that SIG has always been a group of companies and is now further complicated by the fact that the original SIG Corporation in Switzerland has reorganized and has divested is arms making companies. The firearms group and a few new holdings now fall under SIGARMS Incorporated of Exeter NH, USA. with the "Swiss Industry Group" no longer makes firearms.

The newly reorganized SIGARMS Inc. includes: SIGArms, SIG Sauer, J.P. Sauer, Mauser, Hmmerli, Blaser and SAN Swiss Arms (Swiss Arms Neuhausen) in Switzerland and uses the name SIGARMS Incorporated. And the fact remains that my guns still say SIG on the side in capital letters as do all SIGARMS products. Gun owners all over the world still call our beloved SIG Sauer guns "SIG Sauer" "SIG" or SIG's.

Other acceptable usage is SIG Sauer, SIG-Sauer, SIGARMS, SIGArms & SIG Arms, with these all being variations of the trade names used by "SIG" and "SIGARMS Inc." over the last 30 years. The SIG Arms companies have never used Sig and neither should you. It just makes you look like a "Glop" owning moron.

Is it just me? Maybe I have just been spending too much time writing the Gun Glossary and am becoming a bit too pedantic with "proper" gun terminology. Or should we just add this to the "Dumbing Down" of America and ignore it? I think not. SIG Sauer firearms are for intelligent people. SIG's are for gun owners with brains and for the armed professional. No gang bangers and Glock owning idiots around here.

I think intelligent SIG owners should send a properly worded and polite e-mail message the "Sig" offenders and ask them to change Sig to SIG or to SIG Sauer. Or even to the newer SIGARMS. Or maybe they should change the other arms acronyms to mixed case. HK to Hk and S&W to S&w and AR-15 to Ar-15. If they get several hundred e-mail messages from Unofficial SIG Web readers they may get the idea. I have brought this to the attention of the "Sig" offenders, and my requests for this simple and easy to make modification to there web sites has apparently been ignored.

If you would like to voice your intelligent opinion, the worst offender is GunsAmerica.com. Guns America brokers and lists hundreds of SIG Sauer (Sig) hand guns for sale. Would you buy a SIG from someone who did not know how to spell it? I note this web uses "all caps" for the other (many other) firearm acronyms on the site.

Update - Security Arms changed Sig to SIG.

Date Your SIG

Questions keep coming in on how to determine the date code or manufacturing / proof house date of  SIG-Sauer hand guns. Though the article has been online for 4 years now, it may have been obscured by the other content here at the Unofficial SIG Web.

Proof Mark 101 or  "Date Your SIG" is found by clicking here.

Marv on SIG

I have had the pleasure of owning and carrying SIG Sauer hand guns for about 20 years.  I was introduced to my first SIG P226 in 1983 while station in Bad Tőlz Germany with the 10th Special Forces Group.  I bought one of my own shortly thereafter and have owned and carried a SIG ever since.

My favorite is still the SIG P226 in 9mm with the SIG-Sauer Model P228 coming in second place.  I am a 9mm man. I have a few very nice shooting .357 SIG guns. But I am a better shot with a 9mm (as are most of my students) and I like 15+1 ammunition capacity.

I have used SIG Sauer hand guns for all my shooting activities, including IDPA and IPSC "Action Shooting" and for CCW and Personal Defense.  As a Firearms Instructor I have trained hundreds of shooters on the SIG Sauer classic "P Series" pistols.  I have also hunted game with my P226 and P210 and have used my issued SIG-Sauer P226 for CQB, CT and SOT work while in the Army.

I have carried a SIG in every type of terrain and weather imaginable from the mountains to the desert and from the arctic to the jungle.  My SIG has never let me down, in fact they have saved my life on a few occasions.

Most of my shooting buddies have switched to SIG Sauer handguns after shooting, testing and evaluating SIG Sauer guns from my collection. I still carry a SIG Sauer P226. I can't give a better endorsement, than the fact that I carry SIG and I recommend SIG Sauer hand guns to my friends and family.
